What Is Binary Options Trading and How Does It Work in Nigeria?
A binary option is a fixed-return financial contract. You predict whether the price of an underlying asset — a currency pair such as EUR/USD, a commodity like gold, a stock index, a cryptocurrency or a synthetic index — will be above or below a strike price when the contract expires. If your forecast is correct, you receive a predetermined payout percentage (typically 70%–95%). If it is wrong, you lose the amount you staked. There are only two outcomes, hence the term "binary".
For Nigerian traders the appeal is clear: a low minimum deposit (from $5), short expiry times from 60 seconds to several hours, no leverage or margin calls, and a known maximum loss before you click "Call" or "Put". Trading happens entirely online through a binary options trading platform — a web terminal or mobile app — and accounts can be funded in Naira through local bank transfer, debit card or USDT.
Binary options are also known as digital options, fixed-time trades (FTT) and all-or-nothing options. Some brokers, notably Olymp Trade and Deriv, rebranded their products under these names after regulatory changes in Europe, but the mechanics are the same.
Key characteristics at a glance

- Fixed reward: payout is quoted before entry — for example 85% on EUR/USD, 5-minute expiry.
- Direction only: the size of the price move does not matter, only direction (for High/Low contracts).
- Short durations: turbo options (30–60 s), intraday (5–60 min) and end-of-day expiries.
- Broad asset list: 100+ instruments including NGN-relevant pairs like USD/ZAR and Brent crude oil.
